The family includes small to very large species, and many species have characteristic color patterns on the forewings. Limnephilids inhabit all types of freshwater habitats, and the group plays an important role in the decomposition of leaves and other dead plant material in freshwater. The larvae construct straight or curved portable cases using mainly mineral particles and/or plant material.
