Key facts
Length up to 50 cm width 5 mm. Anterior part of body a rich reddish or orange brown, posterior part more brownish. Head eyeless, rounded, distinctly flattened and much wider than body, with paler sides and whitish apex. When preserved in alcohol the colour is lost, except for a reddish brown transverse band (sometimes used to identify the species).
